Freemix Community

Freemix is built on a foundation of Web-based open standards and "best of breed" open source tools, many of which Zepheira are actively leading. We gratefully acknowledge our debt the Free/Libre/Open Source Software community. Freemix makes use of these and other FLOSS projects:

Remix leverages RDF to facilitate the integration of data drawn from diverse sources. RDF is an open, W3C standard that provides a common way for data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries. The data inside your organization is too important for you to lock it into proprietary formats. Its your data, take it back.

The MIT Simile project is focused on designing tools to facilitate interoperability among digital asset distributed across individual, community, and institutional stores. Remix builds on Simile's Exhibit, Potluck and Playground projects to provide simple and easy to use interfaces that allow you to stitch together data and display it in a manner than makes sense to you.

PURLs are open, persistent identifiers for managing Web resources. In Remix, spreadsheets, databases, schemas, mappings, tranformations, people, departments, etc. are all resources that are identified and contextualized. PURLs are used as a means for identifying these resources. The flexibility and permanence of PURLs lower the bar to information reuse across application, enterprise, and community boundaries.

Data exists in more than just Databases. Web pages, news feeds, spreadsheets, email, your contacts lists, etc. are all useful data sources that can be combined to provide new insight. Akara is an umbrella project for a set of robust, core components that provide generalized data processing and transformation capabilities. Akara provides a means of taking data traditionally locked up in an application and enables you to Remix it.

Remix leverages Sesame, an open source framework for inferencing and querying RDF data along with Elmo, a role based interface and component oriented design infrastructure. Leveraging this platform we provide a flexible means for managing data and developing modular domain driven designs.

To support the scalability and robust needs of enterprises, we leverage Mulgara. Mulgara is a massively scalable, transaction-safe, purpose-built database for the storage, retrieval and analysis of RDF data.

Django is a Python Web framework that "encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design". We couldn't agree more.

Pinax is a set of Django-based applications for rapidly developing Web sites. Although Freemix is rapidly growing past Pinax, we gratefully acknowledge the assistance provided by the Pinax community.
